History Option For Museum

PORT Stephens Councillors will tonight decide whether to approve a rezoning application that could close a museum.

A plan to include the Monarch Historical Museum at Williamtown in a special activities zoning for land surrounding Newcastle Airport would increase its rates by about $1000.

The small sandstone museum has operated from Slades Road, Williamtown, for 21 years under Dorothy and Monty Wedd, the renowned cartoonist responsible for the dollar bill animation during Australia's conversion to decimal currency.

"We are told not only do we have to accept a rate rise, but the advantage for us is we can now subdivide our land," Mrs Wedd said.

But they say they don't want that option.
